MAKO ® 284 Express Perfect for West Coast Hard Chargers
The video you download on the MAKO ® Boats website that shows off the MAKO 284 Express says it all when it comes to the design of this offshore charger. To boil it down, the company with perhaps the best reputation in center console boats has made a few cabin-style boats over the years. But faced with the ever-increasing demand for a boat that can overnight, MAKO came up with its best cabin design yet. The Mako 284 Express is a walkaround design. In order to maximize both the cabin and the cockpit, however, room in the bow is at a minimum. A welded aluminum bow rail and the wise choice to cover the entire forepeak with non-skid means the stray fish you have to chase to the bow shouldn’t be too much of a problem and neither will tending to the anchor tackle or running up to toss a mackerel at a marlin.
So with the “bad news” out of the way, let’s take a look at one hell of a fishable cockpit/command center. The Mako 284 Express shapes up to be the perfect boat to share with a partner or an eager fishing family.
The console design caters to the skipper who wants all the controls and electronics within easy reach and view, making one size fit all with a deluxe and multi-adjustable captain’s chair. A great design on the port side is a lounge chair configuration (with removable 36 quart stowage) that looks back at the transom, perfect for the angler assigned to watch the jigs. Or a couple folks can sit side by side on the way out to the fishing grounds.
Mako knows there are times when you will get out with more than the regular fishing crew, so a bench seat along the transom and jump seats in either corner fold into action when necessary.
A 50 gallon bait well and prep station in one forward corner of the cockpit and a sink in the other are part of the amenities, as is plenty of fish and dry storage in the deck and in the stations. A deck shower, toe rail and rod storage are tucked under an extra-wide gunwale with plenty of no skid. In the transom this actually flares wide enough to be a casting platform or to be an aid in maneuvering big fish around the motors.
As for motors, Mako has a wide list of options that goes all the way up to twin 300 Mercury Verados, while offering powerhouses from other outboard manufacturers as well.
So there’s plenty of room to fish, stow your gear and your catch, what about the comfortable side of the Mako 284 Ex press? Here are the important things for an overnight trip for seabass or for partying in Pyramid Cove before an early departure to hunt down sleepers.
Making great use of the 9’10” beam and the forepeak design, the Mako 284 has a fully appointed salon/cabin, with the dinette folding away to create a spacious vee berth. Aft in the cabin is a quarter berth good for a child or for even more storage.
The Mako 284 Express comes complete with microwave, refrigerator and (removable) alcohol stove in a cleanly designed galley complete with sink. Opposite is a standup head with vacuflush overboard discharge toilet and a shower. You’ll have to be careful with the 13 gallons of water, but that should be plenty for an overnighter.
Finally, there’s that famous Mako hull. When it comes to real comfort on a sportfisher, it’s the ability to get where you want to go and get home without getting beat up. No worries with the Mako 284 Express.
