Few other activities drive innovation in boat design as fiercely as does saltwater fishing. The trailerable saltwater fishboats we see today are more seaworthy, more comfortable and perform better than at any time in the past.
MAKO 18 LTS
At first glance, this 18 ½-footer doesn’t really stand out. It is only after you examine the hull bottom or try throttling up in shallow water that the MAKO 18 LTS begins to distinguish itself. Thanks to its patent pending running surface – with its Rapid Planning System transom design – this rig performs stunningly well with very little power. Tracker Marine (which builds the 18 LTS) calls it a “rear-vented stepped planning surface.” It allows the boat’s center of gravity to be placed farther forward for easier holeshots, and also boosts top speed, according to Bob Mataya, director of technical development. With only a 50 hp outboard and three men aboard, it achieved speeds of 30 to 32 mph. And at just 1000 pounds, you can tow this hull with just about any vehicle that has a hitch.
Besides great performance with smaller engines, such efficiency also promises excellent economy – up to 10 mpg, according to MAKO’S testing. And this means more money for fishing, and less spent on fuel. A win-win in our book.
